Processes 1 and 5 are ``bottom level'' processes and are refined by process specifications. Process 1 reads a ``book file'' in from the file system, parses the contents of this file, and uses this to initialize the ``Books'' data store. Process 5 reads all books from the data store, and uses this information to create a new version of the ``book file'' which is written back to the file system. In order to keep this exercise simple, we won't consider the possibility of failure of attempts to read the file in or to write it out again.

The other processes are refined by lower level diagrams (and you can click on them to reach these).
