» My first Bastille Day The French national holiday happened Wednesday of this week. Usually - it seems - this is celebrated with a huge military parade (which I skipped), some firemen dances around the city, and fireworks at 11pm. Together with a couple of friends and 300,000 other people I went to the fireworks on the Champs de Mars just in front of the Eiffel Tower. It was AMAZING. Probably the nicest fireworks display I have ever seen. I don't go to see fireworks too often so I may lack comparison but I was really impressed. There were a number of new shapes, colors, and patterns I had never seen before. Click on the image below to see a 30min movie of the show.
Unfortunately getting home was a bit of a nightmare. I missed the last train and the night buses going out to where I live were all full and not stopping. Around 3:30am a colleague and I decided to take taxi. At least I could practice my French skills with the driver. I'm currently taking 3h a day French classes in Paris - definitely worth it.
