Philip W. L. Fong <pwlfong AT ucalgary DOT ca>
I currently do not have any funded positions for graduate studies. However, I welcome those of you who are funded by government scholarships (or self-funded through other means) to contact me to explore MSc opportunities. In your email subject line, please specify that you are "government scholarship funded" (or "self funded").
My research interests span access control, security and privacy for Internet of Things (IoT), protection technologies for social computing, and language-based security. A list of my recent publications can be found here. A description of some of my recent research projects can be found here. The students recruited for Fall 2018 will likely be working on IoT-related projects.
The minimum qualification is to satisfy the admission requirements of the Department of Computer Science. For an MSc applicant, the departmental admission requirements include (a) a GPA of 3.3 in the last 2 years of undergrad program, and (b) evidence of English proficiency (e.g., written TOEFL 600, or internet-based TOEFL 100, or IELTS 7.5, etc) for international applicants. For a PhD applicant, the departmental admission requirements involve all of the requirements for an MSc applicant, plus a GPA of 3.3 in a thesis-based Master's program (excluding the grade of any thesis component).
The above requirements are not negotiable. The department takes the above very seriously, and potential supervisors (e.g., me) do not have the power to override them.
If your GPA satisfies the admission requirements, but your English test scores are slightly lower than the requirements, then please retake your TOEFL or IELTS exams. I have seen examples of successful applicants doing exactly this.
The information above is provided only for reference. The official Graduate Calendar is the final authority.
If you satisfy the departmental admission requirements, I would like to encourage you to contact me by email (pwlfong AT ucalgary DOT ca). Please kindly provide the following information in your email:
Please allow me a few days to process your email.
If you satisfy the departmental admission requirements, then you will normally be fully funded, via a combination of Teaching Assistantship and Research Assistantship.
