This is the section of the website where I share my personal interests, and talk about what I have done in my spare time. Check back as I add more categories to this page in the future.
Like most computer scientists, I really enjoy playing videogames. It's not all I do, but I definitely would consider it one of the hobbies I enjoy doing the most. I'm a big fan of:
- All music games. I played Dance Dance Revolution for many years and really fell in love with the genre. If there's a music game out there, I've probably played it to death. I enjoy DDR, ITG (less so), beatmania IIDX (I have all the Japanese styles), Amplitude, and the various Guitar Hero games. I don't personally own Rock Band, but what I've played of it I've enjoyed. There is a video of me on Youtube getting a world record on an Amplitude song, as well as some other scattered music game videos in my profile. Check it out if you feel so inclined!
- The Smash Bros series. I played the Nintendo 64 version between friends, but my love for the game grew with the release of Smash Bros. Melee for Gamecube, a game which I've played more hours than I'm willing to say! :) My love for the series has remained with the recent release of Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii. I like meeting fellow Smash fans, so if anyone reads this who wants to play a friendly match, I'd be up for it!
- Street Fighter. I'm not a great all-around SF player, though I'm capable of holding my own in older games. The one game I've invested much time into, however, is Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and I've blown too much money on it at the University arcade. I consider myself an "above average" 3rd strike player, but I'll never be able to reach the skill level of the Japanese or anything. Those guys are nuts!
- Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Two old great FPS games on the Nintendo 64 were my first foray into competitive gaming. I played the single player missions for fast times at The Elite (see my links section), though I've long since stopped. I still fondly remember these two games, however!
- While these above games I play quite a bit of, I still enjoy "general gaming", including franchises like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and such. I do my best to play through most of the quintessential games for each console, though with the sheer number of games being released recently (and lack of money and spare time), it's become difficult!
In the last few years, I've also picked up poker as a hobby. I've studied the game quite intensely at times and consider myself a good amateur player, though I still have much to learn. Like most people who picked up poker since 2003, I've spent the most time with No Limit Texas Hold'em, though in the last while I've tried to diversify by learning the other games as best I can as well. I always enjoy playing a game of poker!
Though most of the above activites are relatively sedentary (with the exception of DDR!), I really enjoy playing sports. I played organized hockey for many years as a kid, and played on school and community basketball teams as well. During the winter months, I love getting together for shinny hockey, and try to hit the community rinks as often as my schedule will allow.
