AFTER THE BRIDGE HAD BEEN ASSEMBLED THERE WAS RELATIVE QUIET FOR A FEW MONTHS UNTIL THE OFFICIAL OPENING ON OCTOBER 22, 2005 WAS APPROACHING..

The topsoil heaped at the South end of the bridge became a playground for the neightborhood boys.

They spent their days digging and fashioning ramps for bikes,

peacefully engaging in a cooperative effort

disturbing nobody.

The ultimate aim was to get up high,

which is what happened here,

until the day when this machine appeared

removing the spontaneous playground of the summer.

Now, the action started again with some very busy folks doing a superb job of landscaping the south end of the bridge preparing for opening day, October 22, 2005.

A festive atmosphere was created with balloons on the railings

dancing in the breeze.

Spruce seedlings were provided for all attendees.

A tent was set up and cookies, coffee and hot chocoloate was served to all who came.

The event was well attended.

The Transportation Director for the city of Calgary gave a speech thanking Alderman Farrell and the project engineer Jedwiga Kroman for their contributions.

Jedwiga Kroman, the engineer, was recognized for an excellent artistic and inovative design of the bridge - resulting in only one roadclosure,

The elementary students at surrounding schools were asked to suggest names for the bridge project. The choice is shown on this picture.

Following the speeches the bridge was tested out by local hikers,

including the fourlegged ones

as well as the local MLA.

The final picture is of five bridge users (+one canine user). Alderman Farrell, who spearheded the bridge project on behalf of the area residents, is in the center of the picture (with scarf).

POSTSCRIPT - THE SINGING BRIDGE.

On stormy nights, when there is no traffic, the bridge sings. It is an strange eerie sound.

Could it be that the regular array of steel bars (1/2"x1 1/2" x 42 1/2") have a common eigenfrequency in the audible range?

Or could it be that the airflow between the regular spaced bars create audible soundwaves?
