Assignment 1 - Research Proposal

Format of proposal:

  • Abstract
write this last and make it a brief summary of the proposal

  • Introduction
State the problem and an outline of your proposed solution.

  • Previous Work
What have others done towards solving this problem

  • Your Solution (The "core")
Sections here typically describe the data structures, the algorithms, the user interface and other technical details of your solution. If you do not have the answer to a technical problem explain how you are going about seeking a solution.

  • Timeline
give a plan for finishing the project by the end of the Fall term.

  • Conclusion
This will be brief in the proposal, but expanded to summarise your results in the interim and final reports.

  • Bibliography
If you use Latex and Bibntex then this part is easy (it is up to you). There are many online bibliographies in Latex format to search e.g. for graphics at www.siggrpah.org

Make sure you cover the following points in your proposal

  • Goal
    • What problem am I going to solve?
    • Who will benefit?
  • Challenge
    • Why is the problem hard?
    • What approaches have others tried?
    • Why did those previous approaches not work?
  • Approach
    • What approach am I going to try?
    • Why do I think it will work well?
  • Methodology
    • What steps (task list) are required?
    • Which of these steps is particularly hard?
    • What to do if the hard steps do not work out?
  • Metrics
    • How will I know when I am done?
    • How will I know whether I have succeeded?
  • Summary
    • What will I learn by doing this project?
    • Will this lead to

Project Web Page and format for documents

Please build a project web page. It does not have to be fancy, don't spend your time making it beautiful unless you enjoy that kind of activity. As long as the material is readable I am happy to just have it in black and white.

For project documents that are submitted for credit, you can use Microsoft word, Latex or plain text or better still just put the proposal on your project web page. Pagemaker I am told is also quite good, you need something that will help you format the maths and the bibliography. You will no doubt spend a lot of the rest of your life using MWord, try and find out what else is available, what else is possible!

In case you want to use LaTeX please use the format found at "Using LaTeX"

Assignment 2 - Final Report

Conference papers should be formatted as most academic conferences using exactly the formats you should have used for your interim report.

Format of Final Paper:

  • Introduction
    • Goal
      • What did we try to do?
      • Who would benefit?
    • Previous Work
      • What related work have other people done?
      • When do previous approaches fail/succeed?
    • Approach
      • What approach did we try?
      • Under what circumstances do we think it should work well?
      • Why do we think it should work well under those circumstances?
  • Methodology
    • What pieces had to be implemented to execute my approach?
    • For each piece ...
      • Were there several possible implementations?
      • If there were several possibilities, what were the advantages/disadvantages of each?
      • Which implementation(s) did we do? Why?
      • What did we implement? <== Include detailed descriptions
      • What didn't we implement? Why not?
  • Results
    • How did we measure success?
    • What experiments did we execute?
    • Provide quantitative results.
    • What do my results indicate?
  • Discussion
    • Overall, is the approach we took promising?
    • What different approach or variant of this approach is better?
    • What follow-up work should be done next?
    • What did we learn by doing this project?
  • Conclusion
  • References
List of the most relevant papers/books useful for the project

In case you want to use LaTeX:
the above report format is available in LaTeX
HERE

Follow additional instructions on various features (i.e. producing your paper using pdflatex, how to add tables, figures, algorithms, etc) by checking the following pages:

If you used one of these for your interim there will be little work involved. Note that the page limit is 10 Pages (double column format). You can also submit supplementary material - images, movies, appendices that will go onto the CD.
