Faramarz F. Samavati is a full professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. His research interests include Computer Graphics, Geometric Modeling, Visualization, Digital Earth and 3D Imaging. Dr. Samavati’s contributions to the science and technology of modelling and visualization are reflected in his recognition in national and international forums. He has made notable research advancements with practical applications in several areas and has more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and eight Best Paper Awards. His work with one of his Ph.D. students on surface modelling (GRSketch) won the 2013 Digital Alberta Award (Best in Cross-platform Content). Dr. Samavati was a Network (Principal) Investigator, as well as the lead of the “Sketch-Based Modeling and Interfaces” project, in the Networks of Centres of Excellence of Graphics, Animation and New Media (GRAND NCE) from 2009 until its termination in 2014. He also served as a co-chair of the Standard Working Group on Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS) of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and is a recipient of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Recognition of Service Award.
At the University of Calgary, Dr. Samavati was recognized with a Peak Scholar Award in 2014 by the President for his excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Knowledge Engagement. He is also an excellent supervisor, who has trained a large group of graduate students and received a Great Supervisor Award, and multiple nominations from the University of Calgary. Dr. Samavati served for many years as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Computer Science.
