Dear XX;

In May 2011, the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM CHI) will be host the ACM Doctoral Consortium, where the event will take place in Vancouver, BC. We are looking for sponsors/funders for this event, where funds will be used primarily to offset student travel costs.

The CHI 2011 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for Doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of distinguished researchers. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their dissertation work to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The ACM CHI Conference, in turn, is the most prestigious and highly-regarded general conference in the discipline; accepted attendees to the workshop will, of course, have the opportunity to attend the conference and present a summary of their work there.

Current committed funders include the ACM CHI Conference itself and NSF (National Science Foundation). Several other agencies from particular countries are also being asked to contribute to the this event. Canadian funders are especially important, because:
* The event is taking place in Canada (Vancouver)
* We expect applicants to include doctoral students from Canada
* Because participants often become a peer network, this event seeds international collaborations for years to come, including between Canadians and others

Funding can be done in several ways; we are quite flexible!
# A contribution to the CHI 2011 Doctoral Consortium, where we will pool all funds to defray costs, especially student travel, OR
# A directed contribution to Canadians, where we will target the funds to defray the costs of Canadian travelers to this event
# Other formulas that fit within your funding strategy.

As a funder, the major benefit is knowing that you will be supporting the development of highly qualified personnel (HQP) in Canada - this is a terrific and very direct use of funds for education! We will, of course, list you as one of the sponsors wherever the opportunity to do so arises.
