Haven't updated for a while, this is from way back in June. On my way home from Seattle to Calgary, I stopped in Vancouver for a weekend, and ended up playing in the Flowerbowl tournament with one of the Seattle womens teams that needed an extra girl last minute. We came in second! It was cool being in the finals, first time ever... hehe. The weekend was pouring wet, but an awesome time.

Seattle Crush

First tournament of the year last weekend! Onionfest, in Walla Walla, WA. About 4.5 hours of driving from Seattle, it is famous for its onions and wineries (apparently).

The weather was gorgeous (mostly), our team did pretty decently (won 4 out of 6 games), and there were lots of Traffic jam jokes (and one about goat rodeos ; ).
Laptop Repaired!

Last Friday, Mark and Jim pulled apart my laptop and did an incredibly awesome job of fixing it.

The problem was a bad connection between the power jack and the motherboard, so my laptop wasn't getting power consistently. A Toshiba repair shop quoted me $750 for a new motherboard, $150 for labor, + tax (their solution was to replace the whole thing, even though just the power jack was loose). Luckily, I was able to find a couple of solutions online. We weren't able to apply the easy fix (soldering the loose connection) since we couldn't see any cracks and it was too risky dumping solder into the power jack without knowing what was inside, so Jim and Mark created an external power jack for me. It works perfectly now, and my new power cable is super long, so I can reach any outlet in my house with it, practically ; )

First time my laptop's been taken apart!

New external power jack and cable.
CSCW 2006

This past week, I've been in Banff for the CSCW 2006 conference (on Computer Supported Cooperative Work). It was a busy conference, as I was a student volunteer (theoretically working 20 hours over five days), got to present my paper (yay), had to demo for four hours (exhausting), and also had to find time for having fun (accomplished : D). We got to stay in the Banff Springs Hotel where the conference was, which was a pretty nice place - great food, great service, and it also had a heated outdoor pool, which was pretty cool. A couple of the pictures below are from Sherman, and more of mine can be found here.

The mountains in Banff

M & P doing some sort of wave in the outdoor pool ; )

Friday and Sunday I spent doing student volunteer work, like stuffing bags and helping out with a tutorial. Monday was the stressful day, as both the presentation and demo session were that afternoon/evening. A huge thanks to Petra and Mark for their help setting up my presentation, as they kindly came to find me during lunch to make sure everything was okay (which it wasn't o.O). There was some panic when the audio for the videos didn't intially work, but the AV people eventually fixed the problem, right before the session started (thank goodness). The actual talk went pretty decently - I forgot to start my timer, so I went through it faster than I practiced, but I didn't forget to say anything, and I still talked slower than usual ; ) and I was also less nervous than I thought I'd be (it was my first conference presentation!). There were lots of questions after, and (non-Calgary : ) people came by during the demo session to say they liked my talk, so it seemed to have gone pretty well : D.

The demos also went well, in spite of me forgetting to bring a wireless thing for my computer (more panic) so that it could connect to the internet (we ended up using Gregor's laptop instead; also a big thanks to him, for his help with the demos). The session ended with a bang, literally, when the projector light bulb blew up five minutes before the end of the session, and smoke came out of the projector. Luckily, Saul was the one touching it at the time, instead of me... hehe (he was helping us pack our stuff up).

(Both the presentation and demo were about my thesis work, which is looking at using screen sharing to provide awareness and interaction opportunities to distributed groups. There's a video and paper here about the work).

Interestingly enough, Mark and Mike R. have the same birthday, and luckily it coincided with the day I finished most of my work, so we all went out to celebrate that night at one of the pubs in Banff : )

Great yorkshire pudding and spinach dip at St. James Pub : D

Tuesday night was the conference reception, which was in the middle of nowhere somewhere on the mountain (the conference provided buses to drive us up). It was pretty neat - it was in two buildings which were each kind of circular, with a big hole in the middle to let smoke from the huge bonfire out. They were like tents made of wood, with an opening in the roof. A bit hard to describe, but it was an interesting setting. We did some line-dancing and ate lots of food, and there was also a guy there doing caricatures. After that, the Ontario universities had their traditional Tequila party, so we dropped by there for a bit before playing cards for the rest of the night.

G & S by the bonfire

Any resemblance? ; )

Learning some line dancing to country music

Having a good time at the reception

Wednesday was the last day of the conference, with the Nectar dinner (Nectar is this big research collaboration thing between the six Canadian HCI universities) and Student Volunteer party both that night (as well as another conference reception which we didn't go to since we had to transfer things from the Banff Springs Hotel to the Banff Centre (where the Nectar AGM was to be held on Thursday and Friday)).

More good times at the SV party.. hehe

Thursday was mostly sessions where the different univesities showed off their work through (more) demos and posters. While it was interesting seeing what people were working on, it was exhausting doing all this immediately after the conference.

Talking about research for once ; )

It was so nice to be able to relax that night by going to the hot tub, playing bump in the pool, and playing vball with P, M, T, and MW. We also ended up playing Mao with Kathryn pretty late into the evening (for the record: weird 7's rule, 4/5or6, EPofO->rule violation?!, & T's barnyard animals). After being sleep deprived for so long, I wasn't able to wake up Friday morning for the "Birds of a Feather" awareness discussion, but I made it to the home/health one, which was pretty decent. After lunch, everyone took off, and won't be seeing some of them for a while : (

Good-bye for now and best wishes to G&S, who moved to Australia today.

At least T is staying a few more days to hang out in Calgary with us : )

The trip home went quickly with PFM and T in the car and although Banff was a lot of fun, it's nice to be back.

The second thing I did when I got home: took a 5-hour nap. (First thing: unpack my computer... hehe).

Carmina Burana

Tonight, we went to see Ruby Nights performed by the Alberta Ballet, which featured 3 shorter ones (Rubies, Butterfly Dream, and The Winter Room), and then Carmina Burana. The shorter ones were just okay (they did get progressively better/more interesting in my opinion - I was falling asleep a bit during the first one, but the setting for the third one was pretty dramatic, it was a tree hanging in midair with a white background and floor), but I really liked Carmina Burana, partly because of the music. There was a live choir singing it, in addition to the orchestra, and there were a lot of dancers involved. There was also this distracting video projected in the background, but overall, I enjoyed watching it a lot better than the Alice in Wonderland ballet that we saw last year!

Annie did a nice job curling my hair, didn't she ; )
