Math Background |
Computer Science 331 includes numerous applications of discrete mathematics. In order to fully understand these applications, students should complete Mathematics 271 before or at the same time as Computer Science 331 if at all possible — and this is the reason why Mathematics 271 is currently listed as “recommended preparation” for Computer Science 331 in the calendar.
The following texts on discrete mathematics are available on reserve, for use by CPSC 331 students, in the University of Calgary library.
Susanna S. Epp
Discrete Mathematics with Applications, Third Edition
Thomson, 2002
QA 39.2 .E67 2004
This text is frequently used as the textbook for Mathematics 271. It includes sections on applications, not generally covered in Mathematics 271, that will be used as references when these applications are discussed this term in Computer Science 331.
Keith H. Rosen
Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications, Fifth Edition
McGraw-Hill, 2003
QA 39.3 .R67 2003
This is another textbook on discrete mathematics that includes sections on applications that will be discussed in Computer Science 331. A sixth edition of this book has appeared but is not yet available in the library.
