How to Set Up a Pair of Spektrum DX-7 Transmitters for Buddy-Box Flying

I love my DX-7 transmitter, but the manufacturers instructions are impenetrable in more than a few places. This is particularly true with the set up for a buddy box with the Plink feature. Plink is a great idea and makes it much easier to set up a buddy box, if you can decipher the manual. The following is from Charles Swaney. Happy flying!

To use the DX7 with another DX7 and cable as a buddy system with the same trims, dual rates and exponential as the master transmitter.

  1. Cable is not connected to either transmitter at beginning
  2. Master transmitter should be bound to the receiver on named aircraft
  3. Slave transmitter should be on a blank MODEL SELECT number which could be named “TRAINER”
  4. Master Transmitter:
    1. Transmitter Power switch is off
    2. Press the DOWN and SELECT keys simultaneously then turn on the transmitter
    3. Press the UP key until TRAINER function appears on screen
    4. Press the INCREASE or DEREASE key to select P-LINK (right or left rocker switch for trainer switch can be selected in this screen.
    5. Master transmitter can be turned off and set aside.
  5. Slave Transmitter:
    1. Transmitter Power switch is off
    2. Press the DOWN and SELECT keys simultaneously then turn on the transmitter
    3. Press the UP key until TRAINER function appears on screen
    4. Press the INCREASE or DEREASE key to select SLAVE/P-LINK
    5. Slave transmitter can be turned off and set aside.
  6. Join both transmitters with connecting cable
  7. Power switch on Master Transmitter is turned ON, power switch on Slave transmitter must be left OFF
  8. Master transmitter should control aircraft until trainer rocker switch is pressed and held against the spring. The slave transmitter should control the model with the same servo direction and dual rates etc. as the master.
